Matt’s Story
I am a “Visual Biographer” who specializes in family stories. Eastman Kodak was the place where I was bitten by the “photo bug”. After leaving, I founded and ran one of the country’s pre-eminent photo labs serving portrait photographers. During my twelve years at the helm of DeltaQuest, I witnessed photography evolve at a tremendous pace, and learned the craft by working with some of the finest photographers in the world. I have been privileged to document the stories of families in the Chicago area as well as Europe.
Inspired Impressions was created at the urging of a good friend, who enjoyed my pictures. In my picture-taking I’ve always sought to let things unfold and capture images of kids being themselves. I eschew the use of sets & props (other than bubbles, a football or soccer ball). I’m not after repeatability. I seek authenticity for that is where the beauty dwells.
My technique borrows equally from photojournalism and sports photography, with a pinch of portraiture, a dash of street photography and a large helping of intuition added for good measure.
A lot of photography, while nice and technically excellent, is merely a visual record of a face or body. I call myself a “visual biographer” because I seek to reveal the story of your family through my images.
Robert Doisneau, a twentieth century French photographer, said it best:
“A hundredth of a second here, a hundredth of a second there – even if you put them end to end, they still only add up to one, two, perhaps three seconds, snatched from eternity.”
During a session I pluck about a second or two of truly revealing images of your gorgeous children. I then assemble them into an album that tells the story of your child and your family. Your album will be enjoyed for years and passed on for generations.
I live in Oak Park and have two daughters, Marguerite and Adeline, along with a stuffed animal brought to life named Chester, all of whom give my camera a workout on a regular basis.
